چکیده

Multimedia applications have time dependancies and require appropriate resource management and scheduling mechanisms. Additionally, such applications have typically large resource requirements, hence, methods to reduce these requirements are desirable. Contention situations occur when the execution of processes overlaps in time. This leads to additional management efforts like context switches and to the increasing demand for resources like memory space. In this paper we present alternative scheduling methods suitable for real-time processes in multimedia systems. These methods serialize the execution of processes in order to reduce the occurence of overlaps. On the basis of measurements the described scheduling mechanisms are evaluated concerning their effectiveness and the required expenses.

Resolving Collisions in IEEE 802.11 by means of Contention Window Reservation Scheduling

The random backoff contention window algorithm implemented in the IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) provides a certain degree of collision mitigation. However, the issue of high collision rates within the IEEE 802.11 contention mode in a wireless local area network (WLAN) with high number of nodes is still not resolved. High packet collision rates result in throughput degradat...

Integrated scheduling of multimedia and hard real-time tasks

An integrated platform which is capable of meeting the requirements of both traditional real-time control processing and multimedia processing has enormous potential for accommodating various kinds of new applications. However, except for the simplest of situations, few, if any, research or commercial systems successfully provide architectural and OS mechanisms which can efficiently support bot...

A Flexible Real-Time Hierarchical Multimedia Archive

We present a hierarchical multimedia archive that can serve complex multimedia requests from tertiary storage. Requests can consist of multiple request units of streamed and non-streamed data. The request units can have arbitrary synchronization patterns. Our scheduler Promote-IT promotes data from tertiary to secondary storage with real-time guarantees. Promote-IT uses an on-line heuristic alg...

Synchronization Relation Tree : A Model for Temporal Synchronization in Multimedia Presentations

Schemes for specifying synchronization relations between multimedia data have important ramiications from user level speciication to system level schedule generation. This paper examines the problems of synchronizing multimedia objects in a multime-dia presentation. We present a scheme to handle the general problem of temporal relationship speciication and scheduling. The scheme proposes a two ...

Contention Control in Multi-access Resource Systems

All wireless communications, including radio, satellite, and mobile systems, as well as wired broadcast networks, require mechanisms for resolving contention. Strategies for allocation of shared bandwidth among competing users have evolved from no policy (e.g., ham radio, where strength of signal determines access), to complex control and encoding schemes, where access is provided based on vary...
